You have finally found the rare pearl, the ideal mattress that will enchant your nights with its incomparable comfort. You have invested lavishly in the best of the models touted by the seller, and you stick to it like the apple of your eye. Now is the time to pamper it! Indeed, whether firm or soft, latex or spring, your mattress must be protected to maximize its longevity, bring you all its benefits and guarantee quality sleep.

So why protect your beloved mattress? How to provide him with adequate protection? Follow the guide, and we take stock in this article.

Why protect your mattress?

Protection against stains

Yes, it's not a scoop, but protecting your mattress will allow you to preserve it from various stains. Are you the breakfast-in-bed type? Does the overturning cup of coffee speak to you? So, you may have a fitted sheet, a sheet and maybe even a duvet; it's a safe bet that your mattress will remember this badly started Sunday morning. So avoid the chore of cleaning mattresses on the weekends. And then admit that a stained mattress is not ideal, especially if you decide one day to welcome guests. In addition, if you are not satisfied with your purchase, be aware that a stained mattress will not be covered under warranty, even in perfect condition.

Impeccable hygiene

At night we sweat a lot. Our body evacuates between 0.5 and 1 L of sweat. The mattress directly absorbs this excess moisture if the latter does not benefit from good protection. And do you know who loves damp places? The mites! A real scourge of the bedroom, they love warm places such as bedding. So, don't give them a chance to settle in your cozy nest and protect your mattress. You can easily wash the protection, avoid the development of these pests, and simultaneously save yourself from dreadful allergies.

Save time for cleaning.

Have you ever tried to remove a stain from a mattress? Cleaning the bedding is a real chore, yet it is essential if you want a fresh and clean place for your nights. So make your life easier by simply protecting your mattress. Depending on the model, you can remove the protection regularly and put it in the washing machine and sometimes even in the dryer. In short, a minimum of effort for maximum hygiene!

A mattress that lasts longer

You love your mattress, and you would like to keep it for a long, very long time! Be aware, however, that your precious ally must be changed approximately every 10 years. This is average, and if you want your story to last as long as possible, protection is again a must. Indeed, protecting your mattress allows you to extend its life. However, by absorbing excess moisture, the latter sags over time and no longer guarantees you the comfort it offers you during your meeting. In addition, buying a mattress is a real investment. So, if you wants your relationship to last, take care of him!

Mattress protection: essential equipment

Mattress pads or mattress protectors

Available in various materials and different shapes, the mattress protector is a great classic in terms of protection. It has two main functions: preventing the development of odors and bacteria and effectively extending the life of your mattress. You can find mattress pads as a cover or a tray. To make your choice, be aware that the under sheets in the tray, often more economical, are fixed thanks to elastic bands on either side of the mattress and only cover the tray of the latter. On the other hand, covered mattress pads cover the entire mattress, without forgetting its height, for overall and perfect protection. Your mattress is, therefore, better-protected thanks to this enveloping shape and the support it provides. In addition, there are fleece mattress protectors that will bring a feeling of softness and comfort to your winter nights, sponge pads, perfect for their absorbent quality, or even jersey pads for incomparable comfort.

Choose a mattress protector for moving or pad machine washable at high temperatures. And if you're prone to sweating a lot at night, opt for a waterproof model.

The mattress topper

Although the mattress topper's first advantage is improving the mattress's comfort, hygiene is also one of its strong points. Indeed, the water evacuated by the body during the night is no longer absorbed by your mattress directly but by the protection. First, this prevents the proliferation of bacteria and dust mites. In addition, a mattress topper is much easier to clean than the mattress itself. Its smaller size allows you to wash and move it easily to dry it and offer fresh air on the windowsill or your terrace. Finally, by protecting your mattress against the weight of your body, it effectively extends its lifespan.

Please note that the mattress topper does not replace a mattress protector. You can therefore place a mattress pad on your mattress topper and cover everything with a fitted sheet for 100% effective protection.

The mattress renovator

The mattress renovator (or integral cover) is designed for renovating a mattress, as its name suggests. It brings a second life to a mattress that is faded or damaged by time and would not have benefited from good protection from the start. The mattress renovator will therefore bring a second wind by positioning itself like a second skin thanks to an integral zipped cover. It thus forms an effective barrier against dust and bacteria, which you can remove and reposition at will.

Bed linen

Although insufficient, bed linen and especially sheets allow you to sleep well and protect your mattress. Depending on the season, suitable bed linen helps regulate body temperature and perspiration. An important and not insignificant point for your mattress. But for that, don't forget to change and wash your sheets and linens regularly, that is to say, once a week on average.

Protecting a child's mattress

Just like the adult mattress, the child mattress deserves good protection. Indeed, some mattresses can be treated with potentially harmful substances for a toddler. The protection of the mattress will therefore form a kind of barrier and will prevent your child from being in direct contact with his mattress.

But that's not all, since toddlers are often subject to small incidents at night: leaks, nocturnal enuresis, or even regurgitation for the little ones. A mattress protector will therefore facilitate cleaning and, above all, guarantee impeccable hygiene for your child's comfort.

Protecting a mattress during a long absence

Are you going on vacation for a while? Is your mattress intended for a second home that will be closed for several months? Wrapping your mattress effectively from dust and humidity is recommended. You can use glossy paper or newspaper for this, as long as you don't stain the canvas with the ink. If you are worried about your mattress, opting for a cover specially designed for this purpose is better. Chosen in the right dimensions, it will protect your bedding during your absence, for a fresh and healthy mattress when you return.

The right reflexes to protect your mattress

Protect your mattress; protections are effective, but they are not enough. Some daily gestures are very important. First, it is advisable to ventilate your room daily for at least 15 minutes. This will renew the air and ventilate the bedding.

It is also best to maintain a temperature of around 18° in the bedroom. Excessive heat could cause you to sweat more and thus create a place humid enough for dust mites to enjoy.

Finally, to maintain your mattress, vacuum regularly under the bed base, between the slats, also on the mattress each time you change the sheets. You can also use a steamer if you have one.

Avoid making your bed again immediately after waking up. This prevents ventilation and promotes humidity and the proliferation of dust mites and bacteria.

Finally, do not hesitate to turn your mattress regularly. This avoids material collapse. If your mattress has a winter side and a summer side, don't hesitate to use them to benefit from each side's heat retention or ventilation properties. Air out, dust off, turn over, and in short pamper your mattress.
